Bye Bye Tonsils

Oh what it a weekend it has been!!!  Both my boys had their tonsils and adenoids removed on Thursday morning.  After 10 cases of strep throat each in the last year it was finally time.  Yes that is strep throat about once every 5-6 weeks.  The night before their surgeries I, just like any mother was freaking out!  I just kept thinking are we doing the right thing, are we making the right decision, are they going to be OK?!?!?!??!?  I calmed myself down around 1:30 am and went to sleep only to have to be up at 4 am to get ready and leave by 4:45 am.

We had the surgery done in South Bend at the South Bend Clinic by Dr. Issacson.  He is a great ENT who was referred to us by our pediatrician.  We arrived there around 5:30 am and the boys were in the best mood.  I felt so bad watching them run around and play thinking that they have absolutely NO clue what is about to happen to them!!!!!!!  When the nurses called us back I was prepared for Lincoln to freak out because of his recent stay in the hospital.  But I was surprised that they both went back with no hesitation.  The nurses checked the boys temperatures and oxygen levels and asked A LOT of questions and then they were ready to go.  Oh yeah and they got the cutest little hospital gowns I have ever seen!!!  Maybe it was just because my boys are so darn cute!!!!  Don't worry I swiped them up just like Swipper the Fox!!!!  They took Lincoln back first and he of course screamed and cried when they took him from me.  It just broke my heart :(  While they had Lincoln we occupied Timothy with a coloring book.  He asked us a few times "when are they going to bring my brother back to me?"  The surgery is very short only about 20 minutes long so it wasn't long at all before they doc came back and told us everything went great and he would be waking up soon!!!  When they took Timothy back he was so precious!  The nurse was telling him about the balloon he got to blow up and just talked to him in such a way that he was comfortable going back with her without throwing a fit.  He was so brave he just walked away with her and never even looked back at us.  Such a big boy.  After they took Timothy it was only a few minutes later when they came to tell us that Lincoln was awake.

The nurses warned us before hand that some children wake up very frightened after being put under.  This was an absolute understatement.  Lincoln was FREAKING OUT!  Crying, screaming, flailing his whole body all over the place!!!  It took until right before Timothy was waking from his surgery for Lincoln to calm down.  Timothy woke up crying a little but nothing like what Lincoln was doing.  I can't even imagine what they must have been thinking.  It must be so scary for a little kid to wake up and not know anyone or anything around them!  We had to stay for about an hour and a half after Timothy was done and then we were free to go home.

A tonsillectomy is a very simple and short procedure but the recovery is just the opposite.  The recovery period is anywhere from 7 days  up to 3 weeks!!  Going home we really had no idea what to expect.  The doctor told us that the first day would be the easiest because all the meds from the surgery would still be in there systems.  The second and third day we were told to expect to be the worst.  I have to say they were pretty accurate in their predictions.  The first day was pretty much a piece of cake for Timothy as long as we kept up on his meds.  He was even asking to eat chips and pizza rolls!!  Of course he wasn't able to eat these things but he did manage to eat a couple of cups of yogurt.  Lincoln on the other hand had it a little worse.  He woke up from surgery needing a breathing treatment and we had to do a few more at home because he was having a little bit of difficulty breathing.  He also starting vomiting that night as well.  The first day we were home the boys were pretty sleepy but at times got up and started to play.  The second and the third day they slept most of the day and night.  They would always start to wake up as soon as the meds would start to ware off.  They both were in a tremendous amount of pain and poor Lincoln's mouth was very swollen.  Both the boys vomited a few more times but haven't at all today.  Today has been by far the easiest on them.  Lincoln slept most of the morning but Timothy was up and pretty active all day.  Timothy has also done pretty well on just Motrin and didn't need any of the prescription medication today.  I gave him some before bed time tonight but that was all he needed today.  Lincoln has needed the percription meds today but has been way more active than he has in the past couple of days.  We took them over to my parents today so that they could get some fresh air and enjoy the beautiful weather.  Neither one of them have eaten anything yet but they are drinking and at this point that's better than nothing.  I am hoping that by tomorrow they might want to start eating a little something but I know they are still very sore and swollen so it's not easy for them.

Here are some pics of the last few days......

Dressed and ready to go
